Busy, Busy

I finished my Feather & Fan scarf. I made so many mistakes and probably ripped out 12 inches total, and had to re-knit. I am going to block it now.

We are having a Christmas brunch on Saturday because my daughter (the nurse) works a shift on Christmas.

I have my Mill Hill Button & Bead Santa kit to work on as soon as I block the scarf.

No snow here--only rain.

Others are celebrating Hanukkah, and a friend observed the pagan Yule on the solstice. Whatever your beliefs, I hope you are enjoying the company of family and friends.

Sewing Sets Finished

I finished the sewing sets, added some new needles and boxes of pins, and sent them off by Priority Mail. I forgot to add delivery confirmation. I really wish I would have insured them--at least I'd be paid for my time, if anything goes wrong. All of my packages sent via USPS have gotten to their destinations, so I believe these will also.

I'm ashamed that the motifs on the needle cases are not centered. Yes, I did measure , find the center, and count the threads, but I forgot to allow for the margin of fabric that gets turned under. The next time I will write down my plan on paper. Measure twice, stitch once!

Scissor Cases Finished

Yesterday I finished the two scissor cases and applied some matching trims. I'm not that happy about them. They are pretty, but next time I will cut out a wider, more V-shaped design.

The scissors were purchased from Anita's Little Stitches. I wanted two different pair that would complement the theme of the sewing accessories.

Now I must make two needle books and two scissor fobs. The package has to be mailed tomorrow.

I see that I have acquired some new followers. Thank you! As soon as I can get all of my Christmas/birthday projects finished, I will overhaul this blog and put my free charts on their own page. I have some things half-charted to finish as well.

I painted a lightweight wooden craft box Christmas red, then brushed Mod Podge on the sides and the bottom. The "snowball" trim was a lucky find of a couple of months back. I then filled it with an assortment of goodies that I thought she might not find in England.

A Biscornu Finished

This biscornu is finished, and the accompanying scissor case needs to be stitched together along the sides:

The red "L' is a mess--it turned out too narrow because I added a very stiff piece of polyester lining. I will embroider another "L" case, using a smaller (and more recognizable) "L" today. I omitted the stiff stuff in the spring case, so that will be wide enough. I don't like the directions that I used and should have trusted my instincts from the beginning.

Scissor Cases WIPs

I embroidered the fronts of two scissors cases. The left is a fancy "L," from a Dover charted design book. The one on the right is from a biscornu pattern by The Floss Box.

I bought the fusible interfacing to iron on them, as well as some stiffer interfacing. The scissors that will go inside them are very sharp, so I want the padding to be thick. I have to finish these two sets and mail them.

Hummingbird WIP

I'm about 2/3 done on this Dimensions Daydreams kit. The coordinating mat is very beautiful. It is a Lena Liu design.

Today I am embroidering and assembling two scissors cases that will be part of three-piece sets (fob, biscornu, scissor case). They are stitched on white Monaco.

I'm making as many things as possible for family and friends because having cancer made me realize I want to leave them all with something beautiful from me. I was told if the cancer does not come back within three years, then it won't. I still have to be very careful and wear sunblock every time I go out. I got sunburned in the car in the afternoon last week, after only a 10-minute drive to the store!

Made Pecan Turtles

I made pecan turtle candies for my son and wish I would have watched the video online first. My caramel is hard because I didn't know to thin it with cream (or water). Oh, well, they are still edible.The caramel part will just be chewy, like regular caramels.

I have to finish my Dimensions Hummingbird Grace because it's for a Xmas gift. I found a clear plastic easel stand for it at Walmart today. It comes complete with a glass frame but needs to sit on an easel stand, not hang on the wall.

Fantastic Kindle Touch

My son and I gave my granddaughter (12 1/2) a Kindle Touch for Christmas. We let her open it yesterday because she has had some difficult with her academics this year and this is so that she will read more and improve her spelling and vocabulary. Due to mom's work schedules and our distance from the public library, she hasn't been able to borrow books from the library very often. She hasn't read much outside of school for over a year.

We purchased a Kindle Store gift card to go with it, so she picked out about six books and we downloaded them to the computer (don't have WiFi). She is really enjoying this (much lighterweight) version of the Kindle, and was happy to find the dictionary. Plus, she can download music to it as soon as I get a program to convert her files to MP3s.

This Kindle Touch shows you exactly how much space is left on the memory, as well as how much battery life is left.

I put on two free books--Kidnapped & Little Women, and will download many more this evening. I'm happy because she has something that can be accessed, even if she has only 20 minutes of free time. She can't use the excuse "I have nothing to do!"

Started Another Scarf

I started a quick scarf in Fleece Artist 2/6 Merino,, Blackberry color. It's being knit in (please don't laugh) the Feather & Fan stitch. Why?

I have so much to get done and this is a fast stitch. Since the yarn is variegated, the simple pattern won't be noticed by the recipient, who is not a knitter. Oh, and when this yarn is washed, it becomes nice and soft. All of the stiffness from the spinning process disappears, leaving it with a cozy feel for the neck of the wearer.

I've finished about two inches and will take a pic later, when the sun is up.

I just realized that there is a whole stack of CDs in a container here on the computer desk, under a pile of other things. I won't have time to go through them until after Christmas. I have several projects in the works.

This is what I stitched originally for my HOE Christmas Box Exchange partner, but had to abandon it because I couldn't find a suitable box for it.

Michaels used to have really nice, heavy, unfinished, chipboard boxes to decorate. I got one trip up there to the store and the quality of the boxes was poor. I had to stitch a smaller design to fit onto a lightweight wooden box that I painted red. I glossed the sides & bottom with Mod Podge. I can't post pics until it gets to it's destination.

My Spring Garden Shorties

I started these fingerless mitts twice and had to rip them all the way out and start a third time. I did not understand the directions. Knitting is like math--if you get one step in the process wrong, everything after that will be wrong.

This is my third attempt, and it is succeeding because I read and reread the directions, using my copy of Vogue Knitting to help me figure out the pattern.

My gripe: the person who wrote the directions in this book (Sock Yarn One-Skein Wonders) should have made them as explicit as possible, not just "work in pattern," because the K (even) rows were deliberately omitted in places. If designers and editors want more people to knit, buy yarn, and knitting books, they need to write out the patterns line-by-line as well as give the symbols and charts. I'm keeping track by crossing off every step in a notebook.

This is a Panda Superwash yarn, but not exactly the one in the book. I have to find the label.

Working On Exchanges

I've been working on exchanges--the HOE Christmas Box and the HOE Stitcher's Choice Ornament. I finished the cross stitch for both, but have not bought the box yet, nor finished the ornie. I chose a pattern for the box that is really nice (IMHO) but is not one I've seen around the blogs more than twice.

I need to work on this blog, and I have been avoiding it for a long time. I've been concentrating on other things, but now want to address this issue. I have to go through all of my backup CDs of oictures and get them downloaded on here. I have to put my own (free) charts into my PC Stitch, and then make them into PDFs on Google Docs. When I tried to make PDFs before, it was with an outdated computer.

Need Advice

I finished stitching my HOE Stitcher's Choice ornament and will finish it today. I also finished (finally) the stitching of Boo Jack.

Yesterday I received a bunch of stash fabric in different counts and colors from Jennifer at Needlework Plus.

I haven't decided upon a chart for the HOE Stitcher's Box yet. I bought a Mill Hill kit but now think that it will not meet the HOE guidelines as it is over 50% beaded, and it is stitched on perforated paper, not fabric. I wanted to try something different and special for this box, but now I'm thinking maybe I need to get a new chart. Opinions?

On A Rainy Day

It's a rainy autumn day here. I am almost finished with my HOE Stitcher's Choice Xmas Ornament, but I can't show pictures of it.

My materials for the HOE Xmas Box Exchange are on their way from a supplier. I need to go to Michael's this weekend and buy a box. I'd like to buy some Halloween and Christmas buttons as well, if they are not already sold out. It's been my experience that the store only stocks a certain amount and does not reorder them.

After I finish the Xmas ornie today, I plan to start an LK "Spooky Time." I stitched one for an exchange before, but not for myself.

I still need to buy some more candy before Sunday, our local trick-or-treat day. I'm only buying chocolates that I like, just in case it does not all get given out and I am stuck with finishing it off.

I purchased two books on sale from Crafter's Choice. One is a quilting book by Edyta Sitar: "Friendship Triangles," and the other is "Two-at-a-Time Toe-Up Socks," by Melissa Morgan-Oakes.

I want to make a book cover and a tote bag right away. I have lots of fabric stashed away and these two projects only require quilt batting, which I have. I don't have 100% cotton Aurifil thread, and need to see from where I can get it. I just love the clear directions and layout of Edyta's book.

I'm not starting socks until after I finish some hand knit fingerless mitts and other knitted projects. I am behind on Christmas gift projects and need to make a detailed daily project list, so that I work some on each gift every day, or alternate days.

Give Thanks Finished

My Vacation Wrap-Up

Well, I was so invigorated and inspired by my brief vacation in Oregon!

My son and I walked part of the trail along the Willamette in Skinner's Butte Park. It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages walking, jogging, biking, and enjoying the outdoors. I know that Eugene is a college town, but half of the people I did not look to be traditional student age. When I walk here at home, I am the only one, except during the hours that people walk their child to the school (and they are mostly going from the car to the school).

We visited the Perkins Peninsula Park bordering the Fern Ridge Reservoir. I was happy to see a family of quail, as well as two white egrets (or herons) in the marshy area before we reached the park. I think I may have even spotted a loon swimming. It was cold and we were the only visitors, but the lake was beautiful.

One day we traveled east into the mountains to the Blue Lake Reservoir, only to find that it had been nearly all drained since it was after Labor Day. On the way home, we enjoyed a picnic lunch at a park on the bank of the beautiful McKenzie River.

We visited Dorris Ranch and were fortunate to see the workers harvesting the hazelnuts (filberts). I love hazelnuts in any form, especially mixed in chocolates, but visitors were not allowed to pick up even a single nut. There was no gift shop on the premises but we purchased some hazelnuts from another local grower at the Eugene Farmer's Market. We enjoyed the brief sunshine and the sight of the thousands of hazelnuts under the trees and in crates.

Across the street from the Eugene Farmer's Market was the Eugene Saturday Market. Although the sky was completely overcast and the air was chill, everyone was having a good time. I watched the performance of a father & daughter violin duo and threw a dollar into the little girl's case. I purchased a gorgeous pair of delicate ss & crystal earrings by Nome May for my daughter, and a hand thrown ceramic rice bowl from Bluff Cove Pottery for her S/O.

No trip to Eugene would be complete without a trip to Sweet Life Patisserie! He got a slice of decadent chocolate cake, and I chose the chocolate silk cake. We shared 1/2 and 1/2 so we got to taste both. Mine turned out to be a silken tofu cake on a crust. The chocolate overpowered the tofu, but I liked his regular (vegan) chocolate cake better. Alas, there was no carrot cake. The selections change, and it was supercrowded when we went on a Friday evening.

And I have to praise Laughing Planet burritos! They were delicious.

We visited the U of O's Jacobs Gallery at the Hult Center, where we saw the incredible photography of Katsui Shibata and the finely crafted woven sculptures of Sally Metcalf. I saw a hand-carved wooden log bench that was inlaid with smooth,black, round (ocean or river?) rocks. I've seen a lot of gallery furniture, but this topped them all. It was a nature lover's dream of a bench!

We also visited the U of O's Museum of Natural History where I was happy to view the Susan Pavel exhibit of Salish weaving (I am a former weaver). The museum had a lot of exhibits on the native peoples of Oregon, and the building itself is constructed of huge logs and adorned with spirit carvings.

Last but not least, I became a member of REI and got some warm wool-blend REI socks.

I did not bring my heavy dinosaur of a camera, and son took the pictures. He is supposed to send them to me on a flash drive, so I hope to update this in the future.

I feel so fortunate to have seen so much of beautiful Oregon! As my son may be moving to another state next year, I probably won't get to visit there again. I encourage anyone with the time and means to travel to Oregon and enjoy its natural beauty.

Oh, and my airline ticket was free--it was a Chase bank promotion that I signed up for two years ago! I had to take three flights there and three flights back, but I did it, sometimes with only 15 minutes to spare before boarding.

The strangest thing about my trip was that I only saw one deer, although we traveled for miles through the countryside and the wilderness. I guess the cougars keep them in check, unlike here, where they are as prolific as rats.

Oregon Vacation

I'm on vacation in beautiful Eugene, Oregon!

I'm visiting my son. Yesterday we went to Mt. Angel Abbey and to Silver Falls State Park. We lunched at a little reservoir before seeing the falls. We were lucky to get a mostly sunny day. We hiked under the falls and sat a few minutes. There was a good stream of water rushing over and the falls were loud.

I flew here via DC and San Francisco. On the flight up from SFO I saw a wind farm, Mt. Lassen, Shasta Lake and the huge dam, and Mt. Shasta. I was disappointed not to see Crater Lake, but there were too many clouds obscuring the view over Oregon. I might have caught a glimpse of it , but not sure.
I brought my knitting but so far haven't done any.

Petal Shawlette

I ordered some Fleece Artist yarn from Simply Socks Yarn Company because I want to make three of these Petal Shawlettes, from the book "One Skein Wonders." The one pictured is in color "Hercules."

I chose Cosmic Dawn, Blackberry, and Victoria. One will be for me and two will be Christmas gifts. This book is so awesome!

I Won Again

I'm so happy to have won the Lizzie Kate chart "Snow Friends" from Peggy. It is sooo me because it features animals & birds---I can't get enough of nature themes.

I have five pinkeeps sewn to their mat boards and ready to be finished. I really wish some company would come out with more colors of ball-head pins. I can find pastel pearlized, white, pastel regular, and a mixed pack of a few brights. It's inadequate for matching pins to pinkeeps, don't you think? There aren't even any black ones for Halloween, or brown or orange or true red for fall.

The weather is definitely moving towards fall here. The leaves are just beginning to turn. Most mornings there is a fog over the river. Here is a photo of some honeysuckle. I know it's invasive, but it still makes a good picture.

Maison Fleurie Mistake

I bound this over the mat board and was all set to finish the pinkeep when I noticed a big mistake. Yep, I left out the bluebird. Now I must remove the piece from the mat board. I don't glue mine--I sew the selvedges together in the back, with long stitches.

A Thursday Update

The water was shut off for some hours both Tuesday and Wednesday, and there was no notice given, and no robo-call. They have been digging up at the end of the block. It came back on yesterday at noon but I had to catch up on other things (due to lack of water) and so I didn't post. last night they were still at work, under lights.

I got rid of cable TV and bought a SONY DVD player. Yesterday I watched this video. Whe I bought it from the sale bin, I thought it was the Tom Cruise one, but realized it was not after I got home. It was a good movie, and better, probably, because it lacked the Hollywood flash and glitz, and focused upon the mindsets and paths of the individuals involved in this ill-fated plot.

Daughter went to Ben Franklin and bought me my mat board while I was occupied elsewhere. She said that the store seemed not to have as much stuff--"struggling"--as she put it. The only mat board she could find were some large scrap pieces left over from their framing section. They still charged the full price. I just hadn't wanted to go up the I-70 hill to Michael's (lots more traffic). I guess the BF will not survive against Michael's too much longer. The dwindling population in our area cannot support too many competing stores.

So, I plan to finish as many pinkeeps as I can with the 3 pieces of mat that I got, before going out to buy more.

The small flowers should have been stitched with a darker pink, as they blend in to the background of the grass, instead of standing out.

Today I will stitch solely on my Fair & Square Round 26, as I need to get it finished.

I downloaded a free "Give Thanks" chart from a blog. I will find the link and let you know from where. I've decided to stitch it upon Lugana.

No Mat Board

I wanted to finish up a bunch of embroidered pieces and make them into pin keeps. Alas! I have foam board but no mat board. Instead, I'll work on my Fair & Square exchange and on Maison Fleurie.

Family & a friend have been affected by the heavy rains from Lee, in two different areas of the nation. Stay safe, everyone!

It's Friday and rain showers are forecast all weekend. I plan to get a lot of stitching done.

Well, I feel much better and have the energy to take up this blog again.

While I was recuperating, I worked on Boo Jack:

It came out great! The only way that these can be displayed is with an easel stand. I plan to get clear stands for all of them. This one is for a birthday present for a friend. I highly recommend these for a quick gift. I got mine on sale from Joann.com and with the free shipping coupon that week, they were a fantastic buy.

andI made progress on my Dimensions Petite Gold Beautiful Bird kit:

I plan to do some work on this blog (add a counter, etc) and do my own free charts over into PDFs that can be easily accessed. I'm going to make a schedule of visiting a certain number of bookmarked blogs each day, that way I'll be able to keep up with all the latest news and stitching.

I see Becky SC is not blogging due to illness in the family, and I can sympathize, especially when cancer is involved.

Radiation Effects/Gift of Stitching

I don't have much energy to even stitch. I've had to nap 2-3 hrs. every afternoon, and that's with sleeping at night as well.

I cannot taste much of anything as my taste buds are fried. I cannot taste anything sweet, or vegetables. Sweet stuff actually turns a vile, almost salty taste. Breads taste like nothing. I just got some Instant Breakfast and will be having that a couple of times a day. The effects are supposed to peak by 2 weeks after the last treatment, but taste buds could take months to regenerate.

I'm working on some unfinished Halloween designs from last year.

I got a $3 three-month trial to The Gift of Stitching digital magazine. It's valid for new subscribers only, and the offer ends July 31st. I downloaded the July issue and am looking forward to the August & September issues.

Cross Stitch Copyright Infringement Site

I was reading someone's stitching blog--don't know how I arrived upon it, but they mentioned this site: http://www.chcross.com/

It's set up solely to allow (cheap) access to hundreds of cross stitch designs. It has Dimensions, Prairie Schooler, Bent Creek, Sampler Girl, Blue Ribbon, Long Dog--you name it, it's probably scanned in and entered on here.

Some of the Prairie Schooler charts I recognize as rare ones.

I don't have time at the moment to email these designers, maybe they already know about this.

I'm wondering why the designers cannot act as did the people who stopped the free music file-sharing, and get the site blocked, banned or something. Maybe the designers could collectively ask the site's internet web host service/ISP provider to shut it down.It seems to be hosted/originate in Asia.

Six More Days. . .

and my radiation treatments will be finished. I can't wait to eat my second daily vitamin and have as many Vitamin C-rich foods as I want. OJ, my Celestial Seasoning's Lemon Zinger tea, etc.

Picture #2 on this site is what my radiation mask looks like. Mine has a hole on the right side where the rays are directed towards the back of my throat, and a couple of related places.

In the meantime, I'm working on Halloween ornaments from last year's Just Cross Stitch ornament issue. I want to but a black feather tree from hallmark this fall and have enough Halloween ornaments to fill it.

After those are done I will concentrate on Christmas ornaments, bell pulls, and decorative cubes, etc.

Radiation Duration Increased

Yesterday I saw my oncologist for the weekly check-up. I mentioned how I had only six days to go. NOT! He said he'd scheduled me for an additional five days, but he did not inform me of that change: 30 days of treatment instead of 25. . .drat!

I am so tired of chewing gum non-stop as it's difficult to hold gum in the mouth and not chew it. The right side of my face is red--like a sunburn, but no really bad effects beyond the dry mouth.

A Simple Shrug

This is the bourse that I made for Cindy D. for the Seasonal Prairie Schooler Exchange on the HOE blog. She chose "summer" for her exchange item. This shows the bourse ready to be mailed. I chose a nautical-themed cotton fabric and rope to match the charted design.

This is the inside stitched area of the bourse. It is from "Summer," by The Prairie Schooler," and is stitched with DMC on 32ct. mushroom Lugana.

I got this wonderful stitching aid and it has helped me immensely!

Such A Cute Ornie

I received such a cute snowman ornie from Marie P. in the HOE Perpetual Christmas Ornament Exchange : Snowman Round. It is so beautifully stitched with sparkly white thread on a blue linen.

The embellishments of bell, snowflake, glass heart and upturned carrot nose add to the charm. I want to have an ornament dowel tree by Christmas this year.

I mailed my ornie over a week ago but it had far to go.

Stitched All Weekend

I spent the weekend watching MGM and TCM war movies while stitching on my Fair & Square squares as well as my HOE Prairie Schooler Exchange. Both of them had to be done and ready to mail today, and they are. I have to mail them today because June 1st is the HOE deadline, and I won't be able to get to the post office later to mail the F&S in time. So, both are packed and I will mail them before I go to radiation treatment #10.

I am not a gum chewer. I hate it. However, I don't have enough saliva in my mouth ( one salivary gland was removed and the radiation causes dryness as well). Now I am chewing special "Biotene" gum non-stop. Ugh!

Radiation Begins

Today is the first day of my radiation treatment. Yesterday they adjusted the mask and inked more marks upon me. It's scheduled for midday.

I am 1/3 finished with my PS Seasons Exchange. As soon as I do a little house clean-up, I will be working on it until it is time to leave for the hospital. Estimated time in & out of the hospital: 20 minutes (actual radiation is 2 minutes).

Another cool, rainy, dreary day here. I read that the ash from the Icelandic volcano eruption of last year has caused changes in the weather. People here are having difficulty in getting their gardens/crops planted.

Snowman Ornie Mailed

I mailed my HOE Snowman Ornament today, after a visit to my oncology doctor.

I had a special lattice-weave mask molded to my face and underwent another CAT scan. It was not uncomfortable and took only about 8 minutes to dry into its proper shape.

Radiation therapy begins next week-5 days per week for 5 weeks. NO chemo and doctor says I will not lose my hair. I have to wear the mask during the brief treatments in order for the radiation to be localized to the proper area and to keep my head in position.

My cancer is very aggressive and has a 25-30% chance of recurring--with radiation therapy, that possibility decreases to 10%.

Now I have to work on my HOE Prairie Schooler Exchange. I'm about one-quarter of the way along. Oh, and I have a great hands-free magnifying lens to wear, manufactured by Bausch and Lomb. I think I'll be able to stitch much faster.

It's a beautiful sunny day here. I voted in our special governor's primary election. The courthouse grounds looked beautiful. Everything was mowed, mulched, and planted, although the bulbs are past their bloom time.

Strawberry Moon Sampler

I was able to purchase the chart "Strawberry Moon Sampler," on eBay. I enjoy reading books on American history, especially those about the French & Indian War and our Ohio valley--"Westsylvania" region. The sampler includes a pictorial representation of Ft. Ligonier, which is a couple of hours over the PA border from me.

I expect to finish my HOE Snowman Ornament today, before we go to Olive Garden for supper. We are celebrating Mother's Day today because daughter was working on the weekend.

Even though my cancer had not spread, I think it must have been draining energy from my body. Yesterday I finally got my bedroom squared away. It had boxes of stuff not unpacked from when I moved in on Feb. 1st. I have my craft books and my sewing table in there, my cedar chest full of fabrics, and my art supplies. Today I will clear off the table.

Yesterday I received some fabric, floss and a pattern for the HOE Snowman Ornie Exchange. I got started immediately and am 1/3 through on this ornament. I think it is a cute design--I hope my partner will feel the same.

I got half through a piece for the Fair & Square designer Round (BBD) but have decided it is too large and takes up too much room in the square. I will scale it back and start over on a new square of lighter linen. This one I will finish and keep.

I'm off to the doctor today on yet another gloomy gray day--at least we are not having floods like states further south.

No pictures of stitching because everything I worked on yesterday was for exchanges.

Mid-Week Update

I am feeling very good--no pain and not much discomfort when I eat. I see the specialist on Friday and hope to hear a good report on the pathology done since the operation(hoping for clean margins).

I sent for sample issues of several magazines because I wanted to try them before getting a subscription to one or two. Today this goodie arrived:

I can't wait to read it. I like to crochet and knit, but haven't made anything in a long time, except for some knitted face cloths.

April 2011 Stitching

I am feeling much better and am determined to get as much stitching done as possible. I'm putting a special Jason brand vitamin E cream on the incision, both to hasten healing and to lessen scarring. Thank you for all of the prayers, good wishes, and the kind comments.

I took a "gentle" walk today and snapped some photos of the beautiful spring blossoms. I missed the magnolias because I was hospitalized, and then it rained for days. They have finished blooming and are in full leaf.

I just adore pink dogwoods!

Below is another of the spring-themed biscornus from The Floss Box. This is the back. I'm stitching it on white Monaco. This is to be part of a 3-piece needlework gift set: biscornu, fob, and scissors case.

The next picture is from the April 1989 Just Cross Stitch magazine. I have looked at this gorgeous butterfly for years and never gotten around to stitching it. Well, no more procrastinating for me! I only have one color of Balger blending filament (it calls for two), and so I will look for the required colors at Michaels or Craft2000. I'm stitching it on Aida because this will be framed for a friend. I'll stitch another (on linen) for myself.

And, last but not least, I've begun my Dimensions "Beautiful Bird."

Surgery Successful

I was released Friday afternoon. The surgery was successful. The large tumor was removed and my main facial nerve wasn't cut. However, a smaller nerve was cut, and so my right lower face including the bottom of my ear is numb, permanently, I think. I can live with it.

I took a pic to send to family but will not post it here as I am not a pretty sight right now. The stitches will be removed this week, but I won't be allowed to do strenuous exercise for some time (no exercise bike, heavy straining, etc).

I did finish my PIF for Janet--it was a spring-themed biscornu from Emily Wilmarth at The Floss Box.
Thank you so much for all of your prayers and good wishes. I was fortunate to have two excellent surgeons.

Surgery Tomorrow

Thank you for all of your kind comments. I appreciate every prayer, good thought, and wish for my health.

I will see the doctor in a couple of hours, at which time I will get more details. My operation is scheduled for next week.

I want to emphasize to all of you that I let a tiny bump go unchecked for months and months because I was not feeling pain. My cancer cells were not painful in themselves--it is when their growth/expansion affected surrounding organs/tissues that I started to feel pain. Please do not delay in seeking medical help if you have any abnormal growth.

This is a peek at a WIP from an old Just Cross Stitch magazine chart. It is a medieval sampler featuring roses. I am changing the bottom of the design and putting something in that is being worked over one thread. The fabric is a shade of blue, but you cannot tell because I took the photo in too much sunlight.

Bad News

I have been diagnosed with salivary gland cancer. My doctor says there is no way to know how I got it.

I will see my specialist later this week, at which time he will tell me the particulars of the proposed surgery. It will probably happen the week of April 11th.

I'm trying to get a PIF done, as well as two other projects.

I'll write more tomorrow.

Finished A Biscornu

I finished a red & white Matrioyoshka Biscornu that will be a gift. It's going to be part of a set: biscornu, fob, scissors case and needle book. I bought scissors to include.

Tomorrow I go in to the hospital for pre-surgery x-rays and a fine-needle biopsy. I will have surgery, but will not know when until I see the specialist (in another ten days).

An Update

I haven't blogged in a while. I was finishing the unpacking and recuperating from carrying heavy boxes up and down stairs. I was on one level before and did not have the stairs.

I had a CT scan on Monday because I have some kind of a parotid tumor or growth that has worsened over the last 6 months and is affecting my face & ear. I'm waiting to hear back from the doctor who received my scan because I don't know if he will accept me as a patient.

I don't feel much like blogging--I'm just going through the motions of the day cooking and cleaning to keep busy, and then watching TV to keep my mind off of it. Maybe I will do some stitching today.

I have missed keeping up with all of your blogs.

No Stitching. . .

to show you. That's because things have been unsettled/frantic here since Christmas. The extra cooking, school vacation, Christmas clean-up, etc. left me little time to stitch. I did not keep up with reading my bookmarked stitching blogs.

Now a move is coming--a move to town. We country mice will say goodbye to the woods/fields and become town mice. I have a lot to do before I'll be able to sit in my new room and stitch.

We will find out this week just when we are allowed to move in. I have to call a moving company on Monday and get quotes. BOXES! We need lots of boxes. I wish we had our own milk crates for books--we have lots of books.

Thoughts

I am going to put pictures of my stitching projects into a small scrapbook. Even though most of them were sent off in exchanges, future generations will see how much stitching I accomplished.

I'm going to start keeping a nature journal. I will write a little description of what the weather is for the day, the clouds, animal activity, just general nature observations.

Due to things beyond my control, I have less than 20 pictures of myself/family/Mother & father from my childhood. I'm starting a remembrance journal today, jotting down everything I can remember from my childhood. It will be something to pass on. I know barely anything about my own parents & grandparents lives. people were too busy to write things down, or didn't realize the importance to future generations.

The Birds:

A flock of grackles appeared out of nowhere a few days ago. They made such a racket! I don't know what they were pecking at on the ground--nothing is moving these days, and there weren't any sunflowers or other large-seeded plants in the vicinity.

My Lace Scarf

I stayed up past 1 a.m. several nights in a row in order to finish this lace scarf. I ended one end straight across, instead of finishing to the end of the motif and creating a zig-zag, which was how the scarf began. I had just enough yarn--it took 2 skeins of Gloss from KnitPicks.

I blocked it on top of a sheet & towels pinned to the floor of the living room. I cannot believe how much it stretched. I hope my sis likes it! I enclosed the yarn description card so that she will know how to take care of it.

Gifts Made in the U.S.A.

About half of the Christmas presents I'm giving this year are made in the United States. Some I've made, and others are from small businesses.

I bought Sarris Candies from a candy-making company about thirty-five miles away from me. They have a store/ice cream parlor on site, and I'm hoping to take a trip there in the near future. Their chocolates are yummy, especially the peanut butter meltaway, and the pecan bars.

I purchased a glass gift from Boyd Glass, a small, family-owned and operated glass-making factory in Cambridge, Ohio. Their glass is unique, very reasonable in price, and collectible. They have a monthly special of a half-price item, and change the colors of the items in production several times a year. They have hand-painted Christmas specialties (trains, scotties) as well as those elusive covered dishes and salts--bunnies, chicks, lambs, hens and turkeys.

I had to delete Montorsville Farms. They haven't put through our order and haven't acknowledged a phone call or emails. I will call them again tomorrow. Businesses who advertise online must keep websites up-to-date!

Embroidered Pillowcases

I finished three sets of embroidered pillowcases for Christmas gifts. The patterns were stamped on the fabric, which was of good quality.

Pictured are two of the Tobin "Gloriosa" pattern, and one from a different manufacturer. I don't like the feel of poly/cotton blend pillowcases, so if I ever make some for myself, I will buy 100% cotton cases and transfer the designs myself.

Christmas Buttons

These are the Xmas buttons that I purchased at Michael's. I got one pack, and by the time I went back (on a separate trip), there were only a few packages left. I'm going to use them on stitched ornaments and other winter cross stitch projects.

A Scarf & Internet Service Problems

For several days we have been experiencing outages of both our landline and our internet service. The rest of the family is waiting for the computer, so I will post one little Xmas present that I'm working on:

I don't remember if this is a KnitPicks pattern, or one from Ravelry. I will check. I finally learned how to do a SSK--I was knitting it wrong(on a different scarf). The yarn is KnitPicks "Gloss"--merino/silk.

These are the squares that I stitched for Chris B. for the Fair & Square Round #22.

The lighting is poor-they are stitched with overdyed Threadworx floss on 32ct. linen. The design is from a Dover book of charted folk designs.

This was my first Fair & Square exchange.
